The transparency seems to work rather nicely! My only critique of the actual animation is that a few of the movements seem unnecessary. The lips and eyebrows are moving, after all, but they aren't effecting anything in particular. The lips seem to be on the top layer too, actually, so I'm confused about why the one tentacle/stand of hair goes under, rather than over them. Aside from that, it looks like you accidentally left a pen stoke in? Either way, each face has a line going down it that doesn't look like it belongs there. I don't mean to sound like I'm being overly critical, haha. I absolutely love the concept and your octopuses have really cute eyes. I also think the gradient looks much better than a flat background would. Good job!
